Recalling the public programme talk on Building contemporary African identity through the history of textiles. Participating was Zohra Opoku and her speakers Aissa Dione and Nunu Design, moderated by Devin Hentz. Together they had a critical conversation about the role of fabric as an art object to enhance contemporary African identity and the place of traditional fabric in reconnection or reconstruction through diasporic experience.
They also discussed sustainability, recycling and the issues surrounding the cotton industry in Senegal.Black Rock Senegal, founded by acclaimed artist Kehinde Wiley in 2019, operates as a multidisciplinary artist -in-residence program in Dakar, Senegal. This initiative provides a platform for international artists to live and work collaboratively, engaging with the vibrant local culture and landscape.
The residency aims to support new artistic creation, encourage cross-cultural exchange, and challenge prevailing narratives about contemporary Africa.
