From Osnabrück to Tamale, the public programme for the exhibition-slash-research project titled TRANSFER(S) (2023), which features a large-scale installation by renowned Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama, co-curated by Kwasi Ohene-Ayeh and Bettina Klein. The programme takes place at Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA TAMALE) from November 28 – December 1, 2023.

TRANSFER(S) engages the rich and complex history of linen production in Osnabrück since the late medieval era and is occasioned by two anniversaries in 2023: the 375th anniversary of Westphalia Peace, treaties signed in Osnabrück and Münster in 1648, and the 30th anniversary of the commissioning institution, Kunsthalle Osnabrück. From July 8 – October 1, 2023, the first phase of the project will remain on view in the form of a monumental tapestry by Mahama which drapes the now-closed Galeria Kaufhof building in Osnabrück. The installation consists of Mahama’s derelict and itinerant jute sacks, strip-woven fabric, and decommissioned batakaris (or robes collected from the northern region of Ghana).

TRANSFER(S): From Osnabrück to Tamale, the second phase of the project travels to Tamale in discursive form with micro exhibitions, workshops, presentations, performances, lectures and other sessions which will delve deeper into the political, historical, and aesthetic dimensions of the research interest.
