14TH DAK’ART BIENNALE 2022

‘Maat is in my belly with the turquoise (and) faience of its monthly festival. This field of mine is lapis lazuli in his festival. I am the Nun who makes the darkness shine bright. I have made the akhmy-demons fall. Those who were in the darkness worship me. I have made the mourners stand whose faces were hidden (and) who were weary.’

Black Rock Senegal
Dak’Art Biennale

Dakar, Senegal

Kehinde Wiley and Black Rock Senegal have been invited by Artistic Director Dr. El Hadji Malick Ndiaye and Secretary General Marième Ba, on behalf of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Senegal, to participate in the 14th annual Dak’Art Biennale with a special project, which due to circumstances related to the COVID-19 global pandemic was postponed until 2022.

For this special project, Kehinde has proposed a group exhibition that seeks to celebrate cross-cultural and multi-disciplinary platforms that contribute to creative production in West Africa. This will be Black Rock Senegal’s inaugural exhibition to feature work made by the 32 artists who have participated in the artist-in-residence program between 2019 and 2021. The pieces will be presented alongside a selection of artworks made by artists who live and make work in Senegal and who have been integral to defining the first 2 years of the residency. The final selection of work, spanning a myriad of mediums and themes, will explore Black Rock Senegal as a site of gathering and shared experience among artists from diverse backgrounds, many of whom have never met one another in person.
